borate and bismuth lead borate glass for gamma rays shielding
materials by Singh et al. (2004) show the effective shielding properties
of bismuth for replacing lead in borate glass. While the study
of Kaewkhao et al. (2008) on the lm, Zeff and Ne of Cu/Zn alloy had
found the variation of Zeff with the measuring energy. Recently,
Croft (2006) discussed certain aspects of experimental design;
planning, performing, analyzing and reporting, for determining
lm aimed to encourage experimentalists to add value from the
user’s perspective.
In the present work, we have investigated on the lm and derived
the half value layer (HVL) and the Zeff of the silicate glasses
containing Bi2O3, PbO and BaO as for the basis knowledge for
development of radiation shielding glass. The experimentally
obtained values were compared with theoretically calculated ones
using the WinXCom program (Gerward et al., 2001, 2004). In
addition, the information on optical properties in the prospect for
practical usages was investigated through UV–visible spectrophotometer
