DNA barcoding was proposed as a solution to the limitations
of traditional taxonomy (Hebert et al. 2003). Its
principal aim is to assign unknown specimens to known
species, based on a short DNA fragment. It also has been
used to identify cryptic species (Witt et al. 2006; Sheffield
et al. 2009), which then can be characterized morphologically,
ecologically, and behaviorally (Hajibabaei et al.
2007).
