At a traditional Burns' night, a piper has to lead the haggis into the room, and the guests should then applaud the haggis. The host welcomes the guests, but a different person addresses the haggis. This person reads a Scottish poem before glasses are raised and everyone toasts the haggis. The dish is eaten with turnips and potatoes.
