Valve has canceled plans to offer PS3 and PC cross-play for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, despite toting cross-platform functionality as a key feature for its online FPS earlier this year.
The decision was revealed by Valve's Chet Faliszeck, who told Joystiq that eliminating the connection between the two systems will ultimately improve the service for both, explaining, “The beta has proved we want to update not just the beta, but the game itself post-launch frequently on the PC. To do that we need to separate the platforms so one doesn’t hamstring the other. So for that, we have removed the idea of cross-platform play — essentially make all platforms stronger by not mixing them.”
Cutting the cord between PS3 and PC will likely come as a disappointment to console players who were itching to give their computer opponents a good fight, but this should allow Valve to keep both communities running smoothly without either being affected by platform-specific tweaks and upgrades
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is on track to launch for PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and Mac in just a few months. Check out our latest preview of the Arsenal mode to get a fix on the competition.
