The purpose of this study was to
assess the immediate effects of a single session of PA spinal mobilization
and a press-up exercise on pain with
standing extension and lumbar segmental extension (as quantified by
dynamic imaging techniques) in people with low back pain. We sought
to examine the immediate effects of
each intervention because both Maitland et al
18 and McKenzie and May
advocated postintervention assessments to detect changes in pain andspinal motion. In addition, immedi
ate changes in pain and motion have
been shown to predict intervention
outcomes.
We hypothesized that
both interventions would be effective in reducing pain and increasing
lumbar extension in people with
nonspecific low back pain.
