Formulation
Gelling agent; Carbopol Ultrez
 10 (Noveon, OH, U.S.A.), was dis-
persed in Deionized water (DI) water prior to mixing with triclosan
(Namsiang, Bangkok, Thailand), which acted as a preservative
along with the 95% ethanol (Malinckodt, MO, U.S.A.). Triethanol-
amine (Namsiang) in DI water was added to the gel obtained as a
pH adjuster. A moisturizing effect was exhibited by the okra
polysaccharide (>15% w/v) (Specialty Natural Product: Chonburi,
Thailand) as shown in Table I.
Stability and preference tests
Physicochemical characteristics of the 16 ABHR formulations were
determined using a pH meter (Qis B200, Oosterhout, the Nether-
lands) and viscometer DV-II+Pro (Brookfield; Miami, FL, U.S.A.).
These tests included the determination of pH at 25C and viscosity
(spindle no. 21, 20 rpm) at 25C. Stability was determined by
observing appearance, colour, odour and texture. Baseline mea-
surements were obtained followed by accelerated testing by centri-
fugation at 5714 g for 30 min [10] and six cycles of heating and
cooling at 4 and 45C for 48 h [11]. Preference testing was con-
ducted using 36 volunteers. The most desirable product was cho-
sen. Frequency of the selected product was calculated as a
percentage using the following formula:

Moisturizing efficacy evaluation
Volunteer recruitment
Healthy Thai volunteers aged between 20 and 40 years with no
skin diseases were enrolled in this study. The experimental protocol
conformed to the Helsinki protocol. People with hypersensitive skin
or a history of allergies were excluded. Women who were pregnant
or lactating and people who were dieting also were excluded from
the study. All subjects were informed about the study both in writ-
ing and verbally and signed a written consent form, which was
approved by the Ethical Committee of Mae Fah Luang University
prior to enrolment.
Patch test
A preliminary single-application closed patch test was performed
in 12 volunteers. Finn chambers (8 mm) were used for observa-
