Vulnerabilities of Preterm Infants
Vulnerabilities of preterm infants include the
transition to extrauterine life, physiologic limitations,
central nervous system immaturity, and the
need for intensive care. In addition to physiologic
immaturities, infants may experience pathophysiologic
problems. Preterm infants are dependent on
intensive care for survival, but are also vulnerable
to the effects of the NICU environment, to maintain
vital functions, promote growth and development,
and provide opportunities for development and
organization
