In April 1898 war broke out between Spain and the United States over their competing interests in Cuba. Spain eventually lost the war and the Philippines were turned over to the United States. The United State gave Spain $20 million. After World War II, the Republic of the Philippines was formally proclaimed as an independent country on July 4, 1946.
