Where the equipment manufacturer’s standard coating materials are not suitable for
the intended exposure conditions, it may be possible to upgrade that coating system.
The equipment manufacturer’s standard finish may be upgraded as long as the surface
preparation and coating are suitable for upgrading. Coatings that have been mis-
applied or applied over inadequately prepared surfaces shall be removed and re-
worked. When the upgrade of a manufacturer standard coating system is required, the
Contractor may apply the intermediate coat specified herein. This intermediate coat
may be applied directly to either the prime or the top coat as furnished by the
equipment manufacturer. Surface preparation shall be per SSPC-SP 1 and SP 2 prior
to intermediate coat application. In addition to the intermediate coat, a finish coat (top
coat) shall be applied per this specification. A test patch shall be applied and visually
inspected for wrinkling and lifting and shall be subjected to an adhesion test to confirm
compatibility prior to a full coat application
