Here in Asia last week we saw the formation of Super Typhoon Nuri and watched as it just missed the Philippines and Japan. Then, we mostly lost interest. But Nuri didn't stop.

Weather events in our part of the world can affect the weather on the other side of the globe.
Here in Asia last week we saw the formation of Super Typhoon Nuri and watched as it just missed the Philippines and Japan. Then, we mostly lost interest.
Well, the storm didn't stop. It moved on steadily to the north towards Alaska, mixing with and strengthening the wind superhighway known as the jet stream. Nuri became a major non-tropical winter storm, battering Alaska's offshore islands with near hurricane-force winds.
All that wind and energy has caused the jet stream to lose it shape and curve southward, bringing frigid Arctic air down into the northern United States

Weather forecasts this week are more typical of the coldest days of January than they are for early November. It's not even officially winter yet
