Experience the most gorgeous decorated Buddha image
After the second fall of Ayutthaya, most of the temples and palaces were destroyed. However, Nag Phra Men Temple was the only one not burnt down because it was located close to the royal palace around which the Burmese army billeted. The temple was built in 1504, the era of Somdet Phra Ramathibodi II. King Rama III ordered its reconstruction including the chapel.
One of the interesting areas of Nha Phra Men Temple is the huge nine- roomed chapel. This is the largest in all the Ayutthaya temples. The chapel, designed in the late Ayutthaya style, faces to the east according to ancient beliefs.
There are no windows, rather there are several grills for ventilation built in the Sukhothai style called Loog Mahuad. The principal Buddha image in this temple is Phra Puttha Nimit Wichitmara Moli Sri Sanphet Boromatrailokanat. The Buddha image is six meters high built of cast iron and covered with gold leaf. According to some beliefs, this Buddha was reconstructed in the era of Phra Chao Prasat Thong.
