Much of the organised extension work currently being undertaken in New Zealand is in the form of public field day style events. In addition to funding these, the industry good body Beef + Lamb New Zealand also provides a massive amount of electronic and some printed extension information. To tally Vets is involved in delivering large-group ‘field day’ style extension events under contract to Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B + LNZ). These are regionally based groups, overseen by a local farmer committee whose role is to work with the facilitator to choose topics and formats relevant to farmers in their district, plus engender local farmer support for the program me. Typically two to four events are run per year for each group.Depending on the nature of the day, Totally Vets personnel may act mostly in a facilitation role, engaging the expertise of outside speakers, or be the main presenter sour selves, but a mix of the two would be most common. There is a distinct trend for an increased rate of remuneration to be required by outside speakers (except those from supplier companies), which makes this type of event increasingly difficult to fund without sponsorship over and above the levy-payer funded contribution from B + LNZ. The extra money required to run these program mes is not insubstantial; and sourcing and liaising with sponsor stakes significant time and effort if done properly. That said, the preservation of impartiality in delivering information is paramount, and any real or perceived influence from commercial interests must be avoided.
