Following the upheaval of World War 1, interest
in conch "pearls" waned. The Art Deco style that
predominated after the war manifested itself in
stark geometries that mirrored the disillusionment
of the time and the preoccupation with
streamlined modernity. We can find no evidence of
the use of conch "pearls" in Art Deco jewelry. Not
until the current decade have conch "pearls" regained
favor as unique and unusual gems in
jewelry. In the last two years, the competition forbuying in the Dominican Republic has sharply
increased (S. Hendriclzson, pers. comm., 1987).
