Medical students are the future health authority of society. This puts them in a position to influence social norms regarding smoking. For countries with a high smoking prevalence, it may be particularly important for prospective physicians to become the early adopters of the idea of a non-smoking culture so they can help to lead their society in that direction (Green and Johnson, 1996; Richmond, 1996; Ferrence, 2001). Therefore, the smoking behavior of medical students in such societies is of interest.
