The site is also exposed to high-speed winds
travelling from the Andes ranges in the east to
the Pacific Ocean in the west. Corning from the
direction of the desert, these winds can reach high
temperatures and need to be avoided. The tow
profile of the structure along with a curved dome
helps to deflect the airflow and protect the interiors.
The arid climate is also a challenge, with tow
rainfall and a relative humidity as low at 5-10 per
cent. In response the hotel features a sealed central
dome area where mist sprays help to increase the
humidity and make a comfortabte environment. This
controlled interior also helps to protect against the
extreme temperature changes of the desert climate.
As the region is prone to seismic activity, the
design incorporates a technique by which concrete
blocks are anchored to the ground with fibreglass
mats to absorb any movement. Also, the complex
is conceived as a series of smaller buildings rather
than one large structure. so as to reduce the impact
of earthquakes.
