Urban agriculture and solid waste management
Solid wastes and their utilization in agriculture around urban areas is an important subject needed urgent study in terms of its merits and demerits so that it will help the farmers to utilize the organic contents of the solid waste in hygienic way and safeguard themselves from the risk of handling waste as manure. Furedy and Choudhary (2003) have reviewed the subject in relation to developing countries. They opine that urban agriculture and waste reuse as manure are need to be promoted in developing countries as the waste are rich in organic contents in most of the developing countries. The use of waste in agriculture will reduce the volume of the waste at the source of generation and also saves the cost of cost of transport to distant places (Lewcock, 1994; UNDP, 1996).
