allowable for landfill disposal. Through improper disposal
methods, mercury may travel from the soil to various water
sources. Lakes have been found to be polluted with mercury,
rendering fishes unsafe to eat. As mercury moves up the food chain,
it becomes more concentrated and poisonous to the human
nervous system.
The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) noted that
the mercury is a globally dispersed pollutant that is accumulating,
and has called to minimize the further release of mercury.
