Expansions and recessions usually are not limited to a few industries or regions but are felt throughout the economy. Indeed, the largest fluctuations may have a global impact. For instance, the Great Depression of the 1930s affected nearly all the world's economies, and the 1973–1975 and 1981–1982 recessions also were widely felt outside the United States. The 2007–2009 recession was worldwide in scope, and its effects are still being felt in 2011 and beyond.
