Awareness stage. Participants were asked to come to the first session having
identified and written a short narrative about the most effective leader they had ever
encountered. In the initial session, individuals were asked to share their experiences
with one other member of the group. After this exchange was completed, quartets were
formed and the process was repeated with the additional proviso that each group was
to appoint a spokesperson who would monitor the accounts of best leaders and identify
any recurring or prominent themes. When each group had completed its work,
spokespersons were invited to identify the leadership behaviors that seemed to be
common to the members of the group.
