Peterson, 1981). Samples from a higher level in the food chain
(snails; Littorina littoralis L. and Nucella lapillus L.) was, in the same
study, shown to contain less than 10% as lipid-soluble arsenic.
3. Characterisation of arsenolipids
Numerous combinations of analytical techniques have been applied
for studying the arsenolipids (Fig. 1), which has resulted in
hypotheses related to the biological relevance of arsenolipids.
The use of various analytical techniques has also resulted in structural
identification of arsenolipid compounds (Table 2). The structural
identification of arsenolipids was limited until the last couple
of years, although structures of arsenolipid compounds were proposed
in the early work conducted in the 1970 and 80’s.
