Rambach agar plate counts ranged between 7.0 x 103 and
4.6 x 104 cfu/ml Tshwane River water, between 5.0 x 101 and
8.25 x 102 cfu/ml for Lefatlheng Well water, between 1.9 x 101
and 2.0 x 102 cfu/ml for Tlhaloganyo rainwater, and between
2.0 x 101 and 2.5 x 102. Rambach agar is a differential culture
medium for identifying not only Salmonella, but also coliforms
and other Enterobacteriaceae. No Salmonella was identified
from any of the samples analysed, from all the water sources
examined, and most colonies resembled coliforms. The counts
were above 5 cfu/100 ml, which is the maximum limit for no risk
of coliforms (DWAF, 1996). The quality of the water sources, as
indicated by this water quality variable, was unacceptable.
