Coal tarpitches(CTP)areusedasprecursorofelectrodematerialbecauseoftheirlowcostandhigh
carbon yield.Inthisstudy,CTP-basedactivatedcarbonmaterials(CACs)withhighcapacitancefor
supercapacitorswerepreparedbydopingelementalNwithco-carbonizationofCTPandmelamine.The
electrochemical performanceandtexturalcharacterizationofCACswereinvestigatedbyconstructinga
single electrodecapacitorina6MKOHelectrolyte,N2 adsorption, scanningelectronmicroscopy,and
XPS. ResultsshowthatCACswithmassproportionofmelamineandCTPbeing1:5possessasurfacearea
of 2573m2 g1, withmesoporevolumeaccountingfor56%ofthetotalvolume.Afterco-carbonization,N
content onthesurfaceoftheCACsincreasedby134%comparedtothatofundopedactivatedcarbons.
Their capacitancereachedupto228Fg1 at acurrentdensityof1Ag1. Thehighelectrochemical
performance oftheCACsisattributedtoitsadditionalpseudo-capacitanceandhighsurfacearea.The
specific capacitancestillpossessed94.2%retentionafter1000cycles,indicatinggoodcyclestability.
