The hypothesis of Rousu et al.[29,30]on the absorption of lin-seed oil being by a mechanism of adsorption to the pore walls fol-lowed by permeation flow was confirmed using both tablet and
thin layer structures. The use of a modified calcium carbonate pig-ment with internal nanopores and large surface area did markedly
enhance the absorption of linseed oil into the coating structure,
due to the action of surface adsorption and free flow in the perme-able packing structure. This has relevance to the offset process
especially for some matt coated papers, for which the proposed re-tarded absorption of linseed oil causes print rub to occur. Those
coatings suffering from print rub would benefit from redesign
where a pigment with increased amount of small pores combined
with high surface area would be used, whilst maintaining the de-sired mattnessces.
