Development of the Whirlwind computer began at MIT in 1944, and the system was first demonstrated on April 20, 1951. It was the first digital computer capable of displaying real time text and graphics on video terminal, which at this time was a large oscilloscope screen, Later at MIT, computer were output onto cathode ray tubes(CRT).
This is the point at which computer graphics proper became a possibility and led to the development of the software called Sketchpad by Ivan Sutherland, recognized as the beginning of modern day computer graphics.
