3. Results
3.1. Salt acclimation and survival
There were no differences (P N 0.05) between the water quality
conditions among treatments (Table 1). Prawn survival was lowest in
the solar salt treatment with less than 70% survival following 18 h of
salt acclimation (Fig. 1). The highest survivalwas observed in the freshwater
control and freshwater pre-marination treatments followed by
the IO (marine salt) and SS+ treatments (Fig. 1). Decreased survival
in the live salt acclimated prawns is consistent with observations for
post-larval prawns (Jain et al., 2008). The higher mortalities suggest
that a significant sensory enhancement would have to be realized to
compensate for the losses associated with the live salt treatments.
