It’s muggy and humid outside, the type of heat that makes it impossible to want to do anything. A slow, stifling ambience fills the room
and merges with the lacklustre sound of the celling fan blades. Adam is tilting back in his chair, rocking slowly on the back legs as he
stares absent-mindedly at the fan. Ben is lying on his front on the padded seating area checking his phone, while Belle distracts herself
with doodling in a notebook. There is no interaction between them, each lost in their own bored worlds.
!
Until Ana comes into the room, carrying a laptop and books and on her way to class. She just wanted to see Belle quickly, smiling and
waving as she makes her way across the room. She’s pretty - elfish and cheeky - with a sparkle in her eye that pulls Adam out of his
slumber as he fumbles with his hair and, encouraged by Ben, takes a bottle of ice-cold Coke from the fridge. Offering it to her with a
practised air of casual friendship, Ana looks at the bottle over Belle’s shoulder as they chat, declining it with a look of mild disdain.
What’s wrong? He inspects the bottle - it’s emblazoned with a ‘kiss’ label. Bad start! He fumbles it awkwardly as she brushes past him -
cool as anything - and takes a ‘LOL’ bottle from the fridge, spinning it casually in her hand so that he can see clearly what she’s thinking.
Adam’s not sure quite how to handle himself, but his friend Ben comes to his rescue, or so he thinks, offering him another bottle of
Coke. He’s just about to take it when he sees the emoticon on this new bottle. It says ‘Love’. While Ben, Belle and Ana laugh, Adam
returns to the fridge and searches desperately for something suitable to save himself. ‘Naughty’, ‘Sexy’ and ‘Wink’ - none of them right,
until finally he finds a simple ‘Hello’. He turns to pass it to Ana but she’s already gone and got her own drink, much to Adam’s
disappointment. Except that she comes over to him and offers it to him. It says ‘Cheer Up’. The two of them laugh, finally managing to
introduce themselves to one another. They swap bottles and take a long, refreshing gulp of Coca Cola, each drink shot really beautifully
and with an epic cinematic quality.
!
Watching this with a contented smile is Ben, relaxed on the sofa. Belle comes and sits next to him. With a coquettish smile, she takes
the bottle marked ‘Love’ from his hand and unscrews the top. The bottle fizzes excitedly, mimicking the rising tension between these
two characters. She takes a little glance at Ben, closes her eyes and puts the bottle to her lips, taking a long, gorgeous, slow drink. Ben is
utterly dumfounded. This friendship is about to go somewhere new and exciting…
