The Shangri-La is really a nice hotel, probably deserving its 5 stars, but I must say that the difference to newer smaller hotels isn't that big considering my needs.
The Shangri-La has somptuous halls and lobby, the pool is ultra cool and the room was very nice. We were even upgraded to a horizon club room or what's it called.
I have been lucky to be able to enjoy all that for a good price thanks to agoda.
I won't go back to the Shangri-La or any other big hotel of the 4 Star or 5 Star type however.
The reason is that I don't need much of the somptuousness. I find that many of the smaller hotels offer comparable comfort for a third of the price.
I will of course miss the pool of the Shangri-La.
Another point is "value for money" for example at the restaurant.
I am not saying the restaurant is overpriced. It certainly serves outstanding food, and still is a good deal compared to restaurants in Zürich or Fifth Avenue.
But if I think about the feasts I can get elsewhere in a city like Bangkok for the price of the "menu special" at 1400 baht (excluding drinks, service, etc.), I just go eat elsewhere.
So, no more 5 stars for me, maybe rather 4 star boutique hotels or serviced apartments.
