Tears were streaming down the person face because the person was going through a rough patch or suffering from some sort of emotional trauma, echoed by all those shadows almost killed your light. So the narrator was holding the person out of comfort, to try to keep hope alive within them so they don’t fall into despair.
Shadows represent an ominous figure, something you don’t fully understand, frightening and overbearing, and the shadow almost destroyed the your hope, what makes you, what gives you purpose.
They didn’t want her to leave
