A research case study structure is useful for analysis of all types of data
relating to a case (Stake, 1995). In a case study there needs to be a clearly
bound system. In this instance the monthlong study abroad program provided
the bound system. The data collection was holistic in nature. Students’ logs and
photographs, one interview with the owner of the Pergola d’Oro restaurant,
field notes, and reflection memos by the Italian instructor/director of the
program (for simplicity addressed from now on as the Italian instructor or
the interpreter) were the artifacts collected and interpreted at the time of the
research, in 2007.
