Maps, local guide books, and fossil or mineral field identifiers are invaluable, usually in compact pocket form. A magnetic compass helps to locate the site in detail and orientate the finds, for example, the direction of fossilized footprints. A field notebook with pencil (and sharpener) or waterproof- ink pen is necessary for notes and sketched records. Modern lightweight cameras are a boon for 'point-and- shoot' photographs of fossils.
