2. Material and methods
2.1. Participants
The study was conducted on 274 drivers (164 females and
110 males) aged 24.36 ± 2.96 years (range 18–30 years). Participants
included Psychology and Criminology undergraduates of
the University of Santiago de Compostela (N = 115, 42%) and several
non-university subjects (N = 159, 58%) of similar characteristics
(e.g., social status, ethnicity, income level) from various locations
in Galicia (NW Spain).
2.2. Material
In this work, we used a Spanish translation of the Arnett Inventory
of Sensation Seeking (AISS) (Arnett, 1994). The AISS contains 20
items to be scored on a 5-point scale from 0 (“highly disagree”) to 4
(“highly agree”) depending on whether the statement in each item
suits the individual’s tastes and personality. This inventory comprises
an Intensity subscale that measures sensory stimulation and
a Novelty subscale that assesses openness to experience. The AISS
uses the combined score of the two subscales as an overall measure
of sensation seeking.
