The boss’ expectations at work are not always communicated very effectively. Even so, as an employee you should always ensure that you are aware of the expectations and meet them efficiently.
Firstly, finding out what is important for the boss will help you deliver the most appropriate outcome. The best way to do this is to actually ask. To save time and confusion, your questions should be fairly specific. Such as:
“Do you require a detailed report?”
“When is the final deadline?”
“What are the most important objectives of this task?”
Secondly, set realistic goals to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Set out your own timeline and meet those deadlines. If the task you are given is unrealistic due to limited resources such as time and workload, you should sit down with your boss and negotiate a change.
“I realise you need this report tomorrow but I don’t have the time today. Could we possibly extend this deadline or alternatively delegate some of my commitments to others so I can concentrate on this task?”
Finally, keep your boss updated on your progress. Only promise what you are certain you can deliver and don’t wait until the last hour to communicate your problem. If there is a problem try to provide a solution to him/her. This will help you work in a more timely and professional manner, while ensuring that you meet your boss’ expectations.
