Of the respondents, 10.3%, 42.0%, and
47.7% belonged to the Thai, Mon and Karen
ethnic groups, respectively. Twenty-eight
percent of Mon and 40% of Karen migrants
stated they had suffered from at least an
episode of malaria. The socio-economic
characteristics are given in Table 1. There
were slightly more female respondents than
males. The majority of respondents were
below age 45 years with a median age of 36
years; the majority resided in this village
for more than 15 years. More than 70%
of the migrants could speak Thai, but the
overwhelming majority could not read it.
The main occupations were separated into
non-forest and forest-related work, the
latter comprising activities involving the
forest. The Karen had significantly more
people involved in forest-related work
and had a lower average income than the
Mon.
