Whether you use spot or process colour in your design depends on the job. Spot colour will give better specific colour matching and more vibrant flat colours, but only CMYK can reproduce colour photos. Sometimes you will need to add a spot colour to a CMYK job, either for a special effect such as metallic or fluorescent, or because a client demands an exact PANTONE colour for its identity. This means additional printing impressions, which will drive up costs. Packaging designs often use several spot colours, but they have a profit-driven imperative to grab attention and are printed efficiently in huge volumes.
