The people of the village began to gather in the square in the morning of June 27th for the lottery ritual. The lottery was conducted by Mr. Summers who had time and energy to devote to civic activities. When he arrived with the black wooden box, there was a murmur of conversation among the villagers. Before the lottery open, he and Mr. Graves made up the slips of paper that had names of head of families, head of household in each family and member of each family in the black wooden box. After that the lottery ritual began. Bill Hutchinson was chosen to get the lottery, but Mrs. Hutchinson remonstrated for this, so the lottery began again. Mr. Summers describe clearly the way how to do this ritual again. He called that he will read the names – head of families first and the men come up to take a paper out of the box and keep the paper folded in hand without looking at it until everyone has had a turn. The people had done it so many times for finding who has got the lottery. Eventually Mrs. Hutchinson has gotten the lottery-the black spot on the slip of paper, so she was stoned by everyone in the village, including members of her family.
