Apply ash on a dry day with no or low wind. Ash can be applied by hand by simply sprinkling it around the stems of the plant or the base. Hand application is the most effective way to ensure the ash goes where you want it and in the quantities you want it. But you can also broadcast larger amounts with a trowel or shovel or other broadcast applicator. Sprinkle ash lightly. Adding wood ash to the garden or lawn will raise the pH. Too much ash can lead to a salt build-up in the soil and harm, more than help, your plants.
TIP: Karen advises, "Wood ash acts quickly in the soil to raise the pH. It is not slow release."
