The US Federal Register has identified some pertinent pathogens
associated with beverages (e.g. fruit juices and milk) including
E. coli and Listeria monocytogenes. The latter has become increasingly
important as a food-borne pathogen (Jemmi and Stephan, 2006), as it can be found in a wide range of foods and in varied and challenging environments (Gomez-Lopez et al., 2005). Listeria infection can cause severe disease in humans, often requiring hospitalization with high mortality rates among young, old, pregnant and immuno-compromised people (Buchrieser and Rusniok, 2003).
