To ascertain further whether HbS was involved in its effects on K+ permeability, o-vanillin was also tested on KCC and Gardos channel activity on RBCs from normal HbAA individuals (Fig. 7). As in RBCs from SCD patients, KCCwas substantially inhibited in HbAA RBCswhether activated by swelling or by NEM(Fig. 7). Similarly, in A23187-treated normal
RBCs, there was almost complete inhibition of Gardos channel activity (Fig. 7).
