The significant differences in the percentages in Mediterranean
dietary patterns (42%) and non-Mediterranean patterns (58%)
derive from the higher contribution of fresh fruits and vegetables in
the former, and from the higher intake of whole-grain cereals in
Northern European countries, since these contain more DF than
that of refined cereals (Cummings, 1993; Saura-Calixto and Gon˜ i,
2009)
