Data analysis was conducted using SAS version 9.2 [19].
We performed descriptive statistics and calculated frequencies for all variables. The variable school education of
father was not included in the analyses as there were many
missing values. For other variables missing values were
excluded from the analysis with the exception of maternal
education, for which missing values were recoded into a
separate category. Chi-square tests were used to assess
bivariate relations between the independent variables age,
gender, migrant background, school education of mother,
ever had sex, type of school and the outcome variables
‘‘awareness of HPV’’ and ‘‘knowledge of STDs’’. As only
four students correctly answered all items on STD
knowledge, they were put in the same category with those
