Some believe that medial meniscus pathologies can also lead to mcl injury. The deep portion of the mcl attaches to the periphery of the medial menicus, and this firm attachment can often cause a peripheral tear due to a valgus force. However, unpublished studies by Clancy(personal communication) have documented by arthroscopy that in isolated mcl injuries there is rarely a true menical tear. The tear occurs in the menicotibial or menicofemoral portion of the deep capsule. These capsular injuries fo not require surgery.
