2. WORK EFFECTIVELY IN A BUSINESS
ENVIRONMENT
Working Within Organisational Requirements
Every business has policies and procedures that define the responsibilities and
duties of each staff member, show the structure of the organisation and indicate
who the supervisors are. It is important that you understand who does what
in the business so that you know who to refer to or seek advice from. These
policies and procedures also outline what is expected in relation to relevant
legislation and codes of practice. During your induction session, you may be
given a copy of the rules and regulations the organisation has developed. This
is often called a ‘Policies and Procedures Manual’ or ‘Standard Operating
Procedures.’ It may be written on a few sheets of paper, produced as a large
booklet, or presented on the organisation’s intranet. It is your responsibility to
read and understand the information that is given to you. A policy is a rule that
the organisation has set and which all staff must obey. Procedures explain how
something is done and may apply both internally (the way staff behave towards
one another and carry out their work) and externally (the way staff treat their
clients)
Some of the documents that set out specific practices that you would expect to
find in all companies include
f
access and equity principles and practice
f
anti-discrimination and related policies
f
harassment policies and procedures
f
WHS policies, procedures and programs
These are all based on legislative requirements and can be quite lengthy.
However they will usually be explained to you when you start working at the
organisation.
The company may also have policies and procedures that relate to:
f
working hours
f
smoking
f
confidentiality
f
dress and personal behaviour
Organisations also have policies and procedures related to consumer matters
such as
f
ethical standards
f
refund policies
f
complaints policies
