The independent environmental varia

The independent environmental variables were tested for
differences between communities using nonparametric Kruskal–
Wallis ANOVA and pairwise comparison (Siegel and Castellan,
1988). The same procedure was used to test for differences in stand
variables and IVIs for different species between communities.
Diversity summary statistics, classification, ordination and
statistical tests were conducted using EstimateS 8.0 (Colwell,
2006), PC-ORD 5.0 for Windows (McCune and Mefford, 1999) and
SPSS 15.0 for Windows (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL). Plant nomenclature
follows the International Plant Names Index (www.ipni.org).
