Verification of the Pi-ta gene by pathogenicity assays
The controls and rice cultivars were inoculated with a blast
race IC-17 to verify the presence of the Pi-ta gene. Each
control used showed the expected resistance and susceptible
reaction for both races tested. A total of 41 accessions were
resistant to IC-17 (Table 1). As shown in Table 1, the Pi-tacontaining
accessions, as determined by the use of DNA
markers, were consistently resistant to M. grisea containing
AVR-Pita; likewise, those accessions that were susceptible to
IC-17 all carried the pi-ta allele in the DNA marker analyses.
However, those pi-ta-containing cultivars that were resistant to
IC-17 must be due to other R genes (Table 1).
