A pirate pulled a musket out of Dr Livesey's hands. He hit one of Squire Trelawney's servants on the side of the head. The poor man fell to the ground. Blood came from his nose and mouth picked up a cutlass and started to fight. A pirate tried to hit my head but Captain Smollett killed him with his cutlass. The Squire shot another man with his pistol. Dr Livesey ran outside. A pirate had climbed on the roof of the cabin. He was trying to fire at us from above Dr Livesey swung a musket at the man's legs and knocked him off the roof. There was smoke everywhere from the pistols and muskets. Men shouted and screamed Then suddenly the fight was over. I stood alone in the smoke. There was a strange silence. The pirates had run back to the jungle. We had won the first fight Another of Squire Trelawney's servants was dead. Captain Smollett was wounded. There were four of us left standing by the cabin. There were four dead pirates on the ground. We waited, but the pirates did not come back that day. We made a meal and buried the dead men. By evening we felt safer. But we knew the pirates would come back. If we waited, they would attack us again and again. Then I thought of a plan. It was a dangerous plan. I did not want to tell the others about it. I was sure they would think the plan was too dangerous. l said nothing to the others. I waited until sundown. I put two pistols, and a sharp knife in my belt. When it was dark, I climbed over the wall of the stockade. No one saw me leave.
