The ethnic and other diversity, and the mind-jarring juxtapositions I h ave outlined in the preceding pages are readily apparent in the offic and opera- tions of the Pink Triangle, an activist-oriented outreach organization founded in 1987, which currently boasts around 50 paid staff, the vast majority of whom hail from the communities they serve. The business cards and much of the other literature that the Pink Triangle distributes tend to be printed in Malay and English, though some of their material is available in Chinese. This literature makes clear that the Pink Triangle is primarily concerned with five(formerly six) distinct though at times overlapping communities. The ethically neutral, medicalized, "social work"-style terminology deployed to refer to these commu nities is noteworthy for being more or less identical to the terminology employed by similarly oriented NGOs in Sydney, San Francisco, Johannesburg, and Rio de Janeiro. This is to say that it is part and parcel of an increasingly global discourse bearing on sexualities, bodily practices, and desires in the age of AIDS.
