Pay attention to the students’ reaction. The problem is not just to see-if the students figure out the patterns, but to pay attention to the efforts they make to try to find them and how they go about doing this. By telling them what some of their classmates are doing, you can give clues on how to make approaches for the rest of the class and improve their ability to take action. Then they will notice that the first two numbers of the response = (number in the tens place) × (number in the tens place + 1).
