Confidence refers to self-beliefs that people hold about their capacity to successfully execute a course of action and overcome obstacles to realize an occupational choice (Savickas, 2013). Those that lack confidence may not be motivated to engage in activities to develop sufficient knowledge and skills (Zimmerman, 2000) to enter an occupation requiring such competencies. Therefore, we hypothesize that those that have a sense of future work self and are confident in their capacity to acquire necessary skills will be more likely to engage in skill development.
