As in some Tantric Buddhist schools (such as Kagyu), Bon relies on ancient scriptures (termas) that were subsequently rediscovered by empowered teachers (tertons).
In the 14th century, a teacher discovered a terma describing the founding of Bon. This terma said that founded the religion while searching for a horse stolen by a demon.
The founder of Bon may have come from the area of Mount Kailas in Tibet, which is also famous as the residence of the Hindu god Shiva.
