To be able to work as an au pair in Norway one has to apply for an au pair permit. This is done
through Norwegian embassies or consulates in the applicant’s home country. The applicant is
responsible for applying as soon as possible after receiving an au pair contract with a host family,
and the au pair has to make sure the application is handed in complete and in the correct manner.

As soon as possible after arrival the au pair should look up the host family’s local police station
to find out their procedures for registering. When getting an appointment, bring the au pair
contract and passport to register in Norway. At the same time they need to apply for a tax card at
the tax office. A few weeks after registration the au pair will receive a letter with the Norwegian
personal number and information about the tax card. Once the personal number is given to the
host, the host can log on to a web site and download the au pair’s tax card electronically.
